Rochefort and surroundings

Rochefort, lovely sunny city, is located in the heart of the triangle La Rochelle - Saintes - Royan. Its architectural heritage, urban and ecological is exceptional. The city has a rich history. 

It is a "new" city built on the orders of Louis XIV in the seventeenth century. It was then turned towards the New World and travelers. 

To see in Rochefort : the Royal Rope Factory and the site of the Hermione, the museums of the Navy and the Naval and Tropical Medical School, the Conservatory of begonia and Transporter Bridge, the facades of mansions and gardens, The City Hall square, the banks of the Charente. These landmarks are all within walking distance from our home.

Sea side 

The coast around Rochefort is one of the sunniest in France. No more than about ten kilometers far from the Châtelaillon and Fouras beaches , the natural reserves of birds or wetlands, the city has a certain attraction for nature lovers. Nearby, the islands of Oléron, Ré and Aix and their strong defenders - Lupin and Boyard castles - offer fascinating landscapes. Nearby, La Rochelle and Royan are particularly lively in the summer. The oysters of Marennes are delicious to taste.

Charente side

Charente saw sailing ships from all periods, the river been already a living area at the time of Neanderthal.
Today, the green valley lined with charming scenic spots such as St Savinien, Port of Envaux ( old shipowners mansions), Saintesand its roman remains , Cognac and its vineyards, is visited by both the land during cruises. These are an opportunity to explore the area in another way.


Around Rochefort, there are very interesting places to visit : the second French Roman heritage (churches and monasteries), the old fortified port of Brouage, the castle of La Roche-Courbon, ...
